My extracurricular design work tends to live in the print + publication design world. I love exploring experimental typography, binding, branding, visuals and how they come together to create beautiful publications.

What is an illusion? The dictionary tells us it’s a noun with a few different definitions: “A thing that is or is likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses,” “a deceptive appearance or impression,” or “a false idea or belief.” It’s important to remember that illusions are not always visual deceit. Society holds many illusions. We create and build up concepts until we believe they are inherently true. We construct false concepts within our Western society, feeding them through the generations until we can no longer tell that they are just smoke and mirrors.
Illusion is an experimental and nonlinear book, just like the experience of gender. Readers will explore the what, who, where, and hows of gender. But this project is not supposed to answer your questions. If anything, it should leave you with more questions than you started with. I hope this book helps you to question gender, question our illusionary society, and question your understanding of these concepts. Sometimes learning new concepts and unlearning old ideas can create discomfort. But this kind of discomfort will help birth a new generation of queer radicalism.

The Calm Before The Storm
The Calm Before The Storm is a two-book project that tells a visual story of mental health via original photography and poetry. The project was to walk from one neighborhood to another and create a concept connecting the two places. I walked from the Japanese Tea Garden to the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and was fascinated by the clear duality. These accordion-style books are each 8 inches by 8 inches.
